Data Skills Gateway

This Data Skills Gateway course is designed to equip you with a set of tools for statistics and data analysis and visualisation, applicable to a wide range of subjects and disciplines.

In the current work environment, data literacy is essential, and transferrable skills in numeracy and computers can make a difference in securing the desired career. By completing this module, you will learn a set of elementary but essential tools for data description and analysis, together with visualisation techniques and the basics of a data management plan (DMP) preparation. You will use a variety of software for the tasks, including Excel, Python & Jupiter Notebook, and Power BI. The module is designed with a wide range of subjects and disciplines in mind and its units can be studied independently and in no specific order, to facilitate the learning and practical application.

Apart from the initial, introductory one, the units are designed to be studied independently one from another and in no specific order, to facilitate their adoption in your field of study.

What will I learn about on the course?

This course is designed to equip you with a set of tools for statistics and data analysis and visualisation, applicable to a wide range of subjects and disciplines. 

Each unit will present theories, concepts and a set of practical activities in an asynchronous, online environment using pre-recorded lectures, exercises, and formative assessment to enable the learner to track their progress.  

Apart from the initial, introductory one, the units are designed to be studied independently one from another and in no specific order, to facilitate their adoption in the specific learner field of study. 

Topics include qualitative and quantitative data literacy, descriptive statistics, software and methods for data analytics, visualisation techniques.  

By the end of the course, what will I be able to do?

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • understand, visualise, and present quantitative and qualitative data;
  • analyse quantitative and qualitative data with the support of software and online tools;
  • understand data collection methods and challenges;
  • identify, screen, and validate data sources; and
  • understand the data life cycle and prepare a data management plan (DMP).

 

How will I be taught?

How is the course delivered?

The course is 100% online. No live contact time is timetabled.

Apart from the initial introductory one, the units are designed to be studied independently from one another and in no specific order. 

How long does the course last for and how much time will I need to spend on it each week?

The learning materials will be available from 17 February 2025 for six weeks. 

The module comprises ten units, in asynchronous delivery and will include micro lectures, external content, set readings, guided learning exercises and formative assessment in preparation for the final assignment.

Does the course have an assessment and if so what sort of assessment will it be?

You will be required to complete one component of assessment which is made up by 10 short multiple-choice tests (1 test per unit). 

Who will be teaching me? 

The course is 100% self-directed. A tutor from Queen ¶¶ÒõÊÓƵt Business School will be assigned to support this course, including answering questions posted online. 

What equipment will I need for this course?

You will require access to a computer or laptop, internet connectivity and a webcam.

Entry requirements: The course is delivered at undergraduate level 1 and each applicant must decide if the level of study is suitable for them.
